Count Patrick d'Aulan

Owner, Alta Vista winery, Argentina

Count Patrick d'Aulan, Owner of Alta Vista winery, combines his love of terroir and family to produce old-world wines influenced by European inheritance.

As a descendent from one of the oldest families in Europe, Count Patrick d'Aulan may be a blue-blood, but he has wine flowing freely through his veins.

The d'Aulan family produces wines in several wine-growing regions around the world, from France - their country of origin - to Hungary and Argentina, where they created Alta Vista in 1998, in search of the greatest qualities of two emblematic varieties: Malbec and Torrontes. The result is the perfect combination of French savoir-faire and Argentinean passion.

After obtaining a Master's Degree in International Law, Count Patrick d'Aulan decided to follow family tradition by leaving his own indelible mark on the wine world. While visiting Bordeaux in 1997, Count Patrick d'Aulan met Jean-Michel Arcaute, at the time, one of the most prestigious winemakers in Bordeaux. Together, they decided to travel the globe in search of a place that would embrace their winemaking vision of integrating distinct expressions from various terroirs, resulting in the highest quality of wine.

The duo settled upon the Las Compuertas district in Argentina, where they infused native Argentinean knowledge of Malbec and essential French winemaking philosophy into the foundation of their winery, Alta Vista and ultimately their flagship wine, Alto.

At the time of Alta Vista's conception, the prevailing reputation of Argentinean wines was focused more on quantity than quality. In 1998, the release of their first effort, Alto, was a shining example of Argentinean excellence and considered a revolution in the local wine industry. All production of Alto 1998 was sold in just a few hours and is still considered by collectors as an iconic wine.

The groundbreaking efforts of Count Patrick d'Aulan appeared again in 2002 when he was the first winery owner in Argentina to release a single vineyard Malbec. This "single vineyard" wine became a benchmark for the Argentinean wine industry.

After the tragic death of Jean-Michel Arcaute in 2001, Patrick d'Aulan continued to follow his dream of establishing Alta Vista as one of the best wineries in Argentina. His dream came true only 8 years later, when the Parker guide, classified Alta Vista as one of Argentina's top 5 wineries. Today, Alta Vista wines are sold in 36 countries around the world.

In 2012, Count Patrick d'Aulan was honored with the Knight of Merit by the President of the Republic of Hungary for his dedication and promotion of the wines of Tokay.

Today, Count Patrick d'Aulan lives in London with his wife, Kristen and their four children. When taking a break from business, the Count, a professional certified pilot, can be found soaring to new heights in his helicopter.
