“Ticket to Ride” Debuts with New Pines Pilot Program
Funds Raised by Boca Bacchanal Make Educational Tour Possible

Children attending the New Pines Neighborhood Center in Boca Raton were the first to experience the Boca Raton Historical Society’s “Ticket to Ride” tour, an educational program that makes learning the city’s history an interactive and entertaining learning experience. The pilot program with New Pines debuted, thanks to funding by the Historical Society’s recent Boca Bacchanal Winefest and Auction, which generated the funds needed to begin this groundbreaking project.

“Ticket to Ride” begins with a tour of the train depot at FEC Railway Station, Count de Hoernle Pavilion, and includes a brief presentation of the city’s history, the role the railroad played in the growth of Boca Raton, and the importance of historic preservation. Each student will assume a role and become a conductor, traveler, or steward, which includes outfitting the children in period costumes with props. Role playing will be an important part of the experience, with the intention of creating long lasting memories for the children, while strengthening community pride and awareness.

Beginning in November 2003, the “Ticket to Ride” program will be available to schoolchildren from Boca Raton. Opening to Broward and Palm Beach Counties the following year. It will take place every Wednesday throughout the school year from 10 am – 12 noon. There is no cost for schools to participate in the program. Reservations are required as space is limited to one class per day. Transportation to the depot is to be scheduled and provided by the participating schools.

Donations of 1930s –40s period props and clothing to be used as costumes for the children are being accepted at the Historical Society, Monday through Friday 10am-4pm. Suggested items: mens and women’s hats, gloves, purses, small travel cases, spectacles, etc.

For information on the program, please contact Mary Csar, Historical Society Program/Marketing Director, at 561.395.6766, ext. 101. Visit www.bocahistory.org for additional information.
