The Boca Raton Historical Society is the keeper of our community’s history; a rarity amidst the rapid and never-ending development and growth of South Florida. It offers a variety of educational programs and exhibitions that provide the community and visitors to the region a tangible link between past and present. Since its inception in 1972, the Society has acted as the community’s voice for historic preservation and spearheaded the community projects to restore Singing Pines (now the Children’s Museum; Town Hall; and the F.E.C. Railway Station, Count de Hoernle Pavilion. The Historical Society’s collections serve a wide variety of patrons as the principle research archives for information on the history of the area. BRHS is also the steward of an ever- growing collection of three dimensional artifacts. In 2009, a new exhibition of Addison Mizner related furnishings has established the BRHS as one of the premier repositories of artifacts relating to the Mediterranean Revival style and Florida’s boom time era. The BRHS continues to support scholarly research and publications such as the 2008 Boca Raton Resort & Club: Mizner’s Inn, a new history of the city’s best known historic landmark. The collections staff is currently working with Florida Atlantic University’s digital library to share its oral history collections with students the world over via the internet
The outreach programs of the BRHS bring Florida’s history to the community in ways which are both entertaining and educational. The Historical Society is well known for its tours for residents and visitors to the area. The Society’s exhibitions have featured a wide variety of subjects relating to Florida history from the growth of IBM and the PC to Boca Raton during World War II. Our high quality educational programs for children have enjoyed a high return visit rate and have all been designed to comply with state educational standards. The BRHS has greatly expanded its outreach with its national award-winning website, www.bocahistory.org.
The Boca Raton Historical Society, the principle guardian of our community’s past, is strongly committed to the belief that heritage education contributes to the identification and cohesion of community and culture. Our tours, exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and lectures not only enlighten visitors and residents about the past, but help create engaged, caring citizens for tomorrow.
The Boca Raton Historical Society is located in Town Hall, a local history museum and archival center at 71 North Federal Highway. The Society also owns and maintains the F.E.C. Railway Station, which is currently being used by the City for civic and educational purposes. |
