Founded in 1972 as a non-profit
membership organization, the Boca
Raton Historical Society’s mission is to collect, preserve,
and present information and artifacts relevant to the past and evolving
history of Boca Raton, and to maintain a visible role in education
and advocacy of historic preservation in our community. The Society
offers a wide range of educational and cultural opportunities, along
with special interest exhibitions, tours and events dedicated to
people of all ages, including children.
Recently, the Society has published
Boca Raton: a Pictorial History and a Stroll through Boca Raton’s
Early History from A-Z. These books, along with the Society’s
curriculum packets outlining Boca Raton’s history, are utilized
by teachers as a key part of their lesson plans in classrooms across
the city.
Another initiative, the Society’s
“Ticket to Ride” tour, is an educational program that
makes learning the city’s history an interactive and entertaining
learning experience will have its debut this year, thanks to funding
by the Historical Society’s recent Boca Bacchanal Winefest
and Auction, which generated the funds needed to begin this groundbreaking
project.
“Ticket to Ride” begins
with a tour of the train depot at the FEC Railway Station, Count
de Hoernle Pavilion, and will include a presentation of the city’s
history, the role the railroad played in the growth of Boca Raton,
and the importance of historic preservation.
Beginning in January 2004, the “Ticket
to Ride” program will be available to all Boca Raton schoolchildren.
It will take place every Wednesday throughout the school year from
10 am – 12 noon. There is no cost for schools to participate
in the program. In the 2004-2005 school year, the program will be
available for all Palm Beach County schools.
The 2004 edition of Boca Bacchanal
is dedicated to enhancing the community programs of the Historical
Society, and to reaching out to the broader needs of children in
an even more expansive manner. Our inaugural Boca Bacchanal, held
March 20-23, 2003, was a rousing success, bringing together more
than 1,600 guests for a sensational weekend of feasting, sipping
great wines and bidding at a dynamic auction, all to benefit children’s
causes.
We are proud to have met first
year goal of establishing a new fundraiser of extraordinary character
and excellence. Importantly, directly as a result, we are able to
fund the services of a Visiting Nurse, who will work with some of
the neediest children in Boca Raton, greatly contributing to their
overall health and wellness. In addition, we now have the funds
to enhance key children’s educational programs of the Boca
Raton Historical Society, and to initiate new programs which will
enable young students to appreciate their rich cultural heritage
and the history of their city.
The 2004 event will build
on our initial success, and in addition to helping us to fund our
city-wide programs, we will be supporting The Children’s Place
South in their exceptional programs that service the needs of children
and families impacted by abuse, neglect and HIV/AIDS.
